Capturing the Soul of Kolkata: An Evening on the Ganges
Welcome to the very first official post on Landscape in Lens! I am absolutely thrilled to start this creative journey with you. When I decided to launch this blog, I knew my first post had to represent exactly what this space stands for: authentic, raw, hand-taken photography that captures the real essence of India. As I mentioned in my blog description, you will never find artificial intelligence (AI) or computer-generated images here. What you see is exactly what my eyes saw through the viewfinder of my camera.
To kick things off, I want to take you to Kolkata—the city of joy—during a time of day when the city slows down and reveals its true magic.
Finding Peace Amid the Chaos
Kolkata is a city known for its high energy, crowded streets, and historic charm. But if you walk down to the banks of the holy Ganges River (the Hooghly) as night begins to fall, the noise of the city seems to fade away into a quiet hum.
On this particular dark evening, I found myself standing on the muddy banks of the river, waiting for the perfect light. The sky had already lost its bright daylight colours, turning into a deep, moody canvas. There is a specific stillness that comes over the water right after the sun dips below the horizon. It is a moment filled with peace, and that is exactly what I wanted to capture.
The Majestic Silhouette of Howrah Bridge
Looking out across the water, the iconic Howrah Bridge commands your attention. It stands as a massive, historic monument connecting two bustling cities. In the dark evening light, the intricate steel structures of the bridge form a powerful silhouette against the sky. It looks like a timeless giant watching over the river. Seeing it from the riverbanks gives you a sense of just how massive and important this bridge is to the daily life of millions of people.
A Dance of Colours: Blue and Sand
What truly made me lift my camera and click the shutter was the stunning, natural contrast of colours right at my feet.
Because of the dark evening sky, the waters of the Ganges took on a beautiful, deep blue tone. The river looked like a moving sheet of dark silk, reflecting the cool colours of the twilight sky. But right where the water washed ashore, the wet riverbanks glowed with a warm, earthy, sand-coloured contrast.
This beautiful mix of cool blue water and warm sand created a perfect visual harmony. It is the kind of natural colour palette that you can only experience by physically being there, breathing in the river air, and waiting patiently for nature to show its colours. No AI prompt could ever capture the true feeling of that sand underfoot or the cool breeze blowing off the blue water.
